Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this program apply to all military branches?

A: Yes, all branches in the Department of War – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard.

Q: Can National Guard or Reserve members apply?  What if they are on Title 10 active-duty orders?

A: No, our program is only available to the Active-Duty component at this time.

Q: Is there a maximum price you will cover?

A: Yes, $1,000 limit per application.  Flights will be booked at the most economical rate.  Miles for Military does not cover the cost of any adjustments, upgrades, or changes after flights are booked.

Q: Can service members stationed outside the contiguous United States (Hawaii, Alaska, Germany, South Korea, Japan, etc.)  apply for the program?

A: Yes, our program is open to service members stationed overseas, but please understand we have finite funding available for a maximum of $1,000.  We will make every effort we can to award flight tickets.  It is helpful for the service members to be flexible with travel dates/locations that keep the flight costs as low as possible.

Q: How do I find a place to volunteer?

A: Eligible service members can volunteer (in-person or virtually) with any 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organization such as the USO, Red Cross, United Way, an animal shelter, church, kids sports league, etc.

Q: Are there specific charities to volunteer with? How do service members provide proof of volunteer service?

A: No, we accept volunteer hours with any 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organization.  As part of the application, service members will have to list a point of contact information (name, phone number, and email) at the charity organization.  The Miles for Military team will then verify with the charity organization point of contact that the service member completed at least 25 hours before proceeding with the flight ticket booking process.

Q: Is the program available to all E4 & below or only those who demonstrate financial need?

A: Our program is open to all E4 & below.  Financial need is not a criterion of eligibility for our program.

Q: If the service member is married or has children, do the immediate family members (military dependents, spouses, children) fly free as well?

A: No, our program is only available for the service members.

Q: Do service members have the ability to choose their own flight dates/times/connection?

A: Service members can request preferred flights, times, and connections.  The Miles for Military team will make the final decision on flight purchases and cannot guarantee service member’s preferred airport or times.

Q: Are there any blackout dates or other restrictions? Are all CONUS airports available in this program?

A: There are no blackout dates and all US airports are available for consideration, but the $1,000 purchase is the main restriction on awarding flights.

Q: How many flights do you provide? Are flights awarded on a first come, first served basis to those eligible or is there some sort of method to rank those who receive the compensation?

A: One roundtrip ticket awarded per year to eligible service members.  Service members must submit their application at least one month prior to requested travel dates.  The Miles for Military team processes applications in order of requested travel dates.

Q: Do you reimburse flight tickets already paid for?

A: No.
